Yes, Chiropractors can help get rid of vertigo (or at least
in some cases). The common symptoms of vertigo may be dizziness, vomiting and
sweating profusely. Also, you might notice the room spinning in a circle but only
in one direction, clockwise or counter-clockwise. We have even heard of cases
where the patient tends to feel like they are getting thrown on the floor by a
sudden episode claiming they felt like the vertigo was pushing them in that
direction.
What causes Vertigo?
Head and Neck trauma are two of the biggest causes of
vertigo. Most vertigo problems seem to come from the inner ear and from other
disturbances that are in the pathways of the nervous system. Experiencing vertigo
can seem to impact your entire world for example: getting sick while laying
down or making quick head movements, random dizziness, light sensitivity,
randomly falling to the floor, hearing problems and more...
If you are experiencing vertigo, chiropractic treatments might be able to help.
Livestrong recently published a report offering chiropractic
solutions for vertigo sickness.
Chiropractic manipulation may help cure vertigo. Livestrong
stated that chiropractors may use manipulation techniques to help target joints
that are not working properly. Faulty motion patters in the upper neck may tell
the brain misinformation about your body's movement and position front the
joints to the brain. Anyone experiencing the symptoms maybe experiencing what's
called cervicogenic vertigo, and it can be helped by chiropractic adjustments.
The inner ear is the home of the body's true center of
balance. This is called your vestibulocochlear (auditory vestibular nerve) system. This system is made up of
fluid-filled tubes that are lined with hair-like sensors that provide
information about your position and movement to the central nervous system.
Some debris may accumulate and settle in there causing vertigo in some
individuals.
If it is diagnosed that the patient's vertigo is coming from
the inner ear, chiropractors might use what's referred to as the "Epley Maneuver" to re-position the
debris to a non harmful position.
What Is The Epley Maneuver:
Exercises that help relieve vertigo sickness
Your chiropractor may give you exercises that help with vertigo
too. One of the most common exercises for vertigo sickness is the "Brandt-Daroff Technique". This
technique requires the patient to sit on one edge of the bed and lay first to
one side, sit back upright and then lay to the other side at 30-60 second
intervals. Tai Chi is also great exercise that may also help, the slow
movements provide a great way to focus on your balance and body movements.
What Is The Brandt-Daroff Exercise for Vertigo and How Do I Do It At Home?
The Brandt-Daroff technique is an exercise made to end the
symptoms of vertigo and speed up the compensation process. Its often
recommended for patients who have BBPV or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
These exercises and techniques don't cure vertigo but they can reduce the
symptoms of it.
Here's how to do the Brand-Daroff Exercise at home:
- Sit on the bed in an upright position with your back straight
- Point your nose up about an inch or two and turn your head at a 45 degree angle
- Lay your head and body down on the bed on the opposite side you turned your head
- Stay in that position for about 30-60 seconds or until your vertigo stops
- Now, move back to the starting position
- Do the same exact thing to the other side
- Repeat these steps a couple of times a day, every day that you are experiencing vertigo or as a preventative step
Your chiropractor might also ask you questions about your
daily habits and diet that might be other causes of vertigo. Alcohol, caffeine
and tobacco are some of the major causes of vertigo and depressors of the
nervous system. Also sleeping pills and other antihistamines can give you
dizziness and vertigo as well. Your chiropractor might also suggest other
treatments that involve meditation, breathing techniques and relaxation to
assist the curing of your vertigo.
